NZSG Online DNA Interest Group (ODIG)

About the Online DNA Interest Group (ODIG)
The aim of the Online DNA Interest group is to build and nurture an online community that supports the effective use of DNA-related information to better inform family history research. You need to be an NZSG member to be able to join ODIG and access the resources.
Note: The focus of ODIG is to support members to learn how to work with their DNA-related information so that they can solve their own puzzles into the future. ODIG Facilitators are NOT ‘Search Angels’ and solving personal DNA-related puzzles for ODIG members is NOT the intention of the group.
As a member of ODIG, you will be invited to:
- Regular online monthly meetings held via Microsoft TEAMS
- Our Online DNA Interest Group Portal via Google Classrooms
ODIG has two short “How-To” slide presentations you may find useful.
Online monthly meetings are at 7:30pm on the last Wednesday of the month.
Those who are already registered members of ODIG will automatically receive an invitation and link to each meeting 48 hrs and 2 hrs in advance of the start time. If you aren’t yet a registered member of ODIG and you want to attend a live monthly presentation, it is important that you register at least 48 hours in advance to receive the meeting reminder.
Each meeting comprises a presentation during which members are able to ask questions via the Q&A function. These questions should be specific to the presentation itself so they can be answered by the presenter during the live session. Generally there are pauses at regular periods during the presentation to enable this.
Presentations alternate between core concepts and case studies that illustrate those concepts.
The members portal uses Google classroom which is available all hours (24/7) to Online DNA Interest Group members who respond to the invitation to join it.
Initially focused on highlighting available DNA-related Resources within the classroom, the ODIG planning team hope to extend the Portal in the future to enable members to interact within a Forum context, once issues associated with effectively facilitating and moderating discussion have been worked through.
Who can Join the Online DNA Interest Group (ODIG)?
Membership of ODIG is available to all NZSG members with an interest in using DNA for family history research purposes regardless of level of experience; from those thinking about testing and wanting to know more through to the advanced user who is able to contribute their knowledge to help others in the group.
