Following the recent bereavement of Vivienne Parker, as a mark of respect, the FRC & Library will be closed all day on Wednesday 9 July.

Family History Month

Family History Month is observed annually during the month of August across New Zealand and Australia. It's a time to reflect on our roots and celebrate our unique histories and identities.

Apart from a range of special events held all over New Zealand, it's an opportunity to showcase the significant resources that are available to researchers of family history.

These are some of the events being held in August 2025. Also check the Events Calendar for local branch and interest group meetings.

Auckland Family History Expo

NZSG proudly presents a weekend-long event covering a wide range of topics on researching genealogy and family history. Friday 8 August to Sunday 10 August, Fickling Centre, 546 Mt Albert Road, Three Kings.

  • Friday 8 August 2025: Opening event $40 to cover catering costs
  • Saturday 9 August 2025: $5 door entrance
  • Sunday 10 August 2025: $5 door entrance

Christchurch Family History Expo

The Christchurch Family History Expo will be back on Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 August 2025. Christchurch City Libraries will host two days of family history fun.

Wellington Family History Day

Saturday 30 August 2025 at Johnsonville Community Centre (next to the Library), 10am to 4.30pm - doors open at 9.30am.

South Waikato Branch Open Day

23 August, 10am - 3pm - Open Day at St Mark’s Community House, Bridge Street, Tokoroa. Talk to a Genealogist, get help with a family tree "problem", expertise on most areas of the world. For more information contact southwaikato@genealogy.org.nz.

South Waikato - Genealogy and DNA

How to use one to help the other. Four sequential sessions on Wednesday 6, 13, 20 and 27 August from 10am to noon approx. at Tokoroa Library. Please ask at desk so we can cater for numbers in space and connections as needed.  Lead by Elsie Monahan –author, researcher and DNA user.

Te Awamutu Genealogy - Beginner Workshops

Do you have family or friends interested in family history but with no idea how to start? The Te Awamutu genealogy group is running a couple of sessions for beginners on two consecutive Saturdays in August.

  • The 16 August session focuses on Getting Started with Family History.
  • The 23 August session focuses on Getting Started with DNA.

Both sessions are 1pm-3pm at the St John Ambulance Hall, Palmer Street, Te Awamutu.
